Cut Outs – Melbourne Street Art Doco 2003

24 Feb

Charting the rise of the stencil art movement in Melbourne, Cut Outs is a gritty, urban tale of community and social commentary. Having played at ACMI, St Kilda film and MUFF festivals and on broadcast, Director Cassandra Bakic brings the movement to life in a slick and stylised film.

This a doco that i worked on with Cassandra bakic, Adam Potrakis, Lara Luz & Debra Patterson. The subject is the growing Melbourne STENCIAL ARTS movement as of 2003.
In December 2003 ‘Cut Outs’ won The Best Film at the RMIT University Screen awards and was nominated in following categories: Best Cinematography, Best Soundtrack, Best Post production.
In July 2004 “Cut Outs” won Best Tertiary Documentary at ATOM Awards. ATOM stands for Australian Teachers of Media and it is annual festival, which highlights the best works in film and television Australia wide. The film was also included in the St Kilda Film Festival and the Melbourne Underground Film Festival (MUFF) in 2004.

Directed and edited by Cassandra Bakic, this was an incredible project to work camera on. We explored the back alleys of Melbourne, finding hidden gems tucked away behind bins out the back of Chinese restaurants or half way up a wall. The intro of this film still blows me away and after the recent attempts to save the Banksy art failed, it is a glimpse back into Melbourne’s street art history. In addition to doing most of the camera work i also have a few cameos, firstly as the graffer at the end of the intro and then as the face of Prism as he was unable to make it for the shoot.

Cut outs is being screened as part of the “There’s More” film festival on the 23/3/12 at the Cocoa Studios in Brunswick. This enabled me to fix up the colour grading (or lack of) in the original version and upload a higher res version.

Peter Chpaman is a Melbourne musician, both originals and covers. here are two promotional videos I have produced for his various projects over the years.

The second video is taken from ‘Peter Chapman’ performing live on stage at Federation Square. Peter and band performing tracks from his ‘Cleanskin’ album and ‘Catch Fire’ ep. Peter Chapman promo dvd clip, cut from a powerful and emotive set. Another quality sound tasting from the ‘Cleanskin’ batch.
The footage was shot by the Fed Square media department and provided to me to edit together into a promo video.
